Photonics services
Photonics technology arises from the use of photons rather than electrons in the signal processing functions necessary for new generation applications in a range of industries. Its main applications include high-bandwidth telecommunications, defence, security and sensing.

NLO chromophores under UV light
Nonlinear optical molecular chromophores and polymers to order
We offer for sale a number of NLO chromophores, most of which can be prepared as polymer-tetherable derivatives that offer access to both side- and main- chain polymer matrices. A number of synthetic intermediates that serve as precursors to these molecular classes, including the cyanines and merocyanines, are also available. Selected polymers are available or can be made to order.
Pilot-scale multi-step organic synthesis
Our specialised scale-up facilities allow us to offer a unique package to clients for preparing synthetic organic compounds including:
- Discovery
- Research and development
- Process development
- Calorimetry
- Characterisation
We are able to manufacture organic compounds from the small-scale (100mg to 10g scale), right through to the 100g-1kg level. Additionally, by accessing our on-site large scale synthesis facilities, we are able to consider larger scale preparations.
Photonics facilties and expertise include:
- Fully equipped synthetic chemistry laboratories
- The usual range of tools for the characterisation of organic materials including 300 & 500 MHz NMR[?] instruments and a high resolution mass spectrometer
- Large scale synthesis facilities up to 50 litre capacity
- A contact poling station able to operate up to 350 °C and 10,000 V under an inert atmosphere
- A corona poling station able to operate up to 300°C and 10,000V under an inert atmosphere
- A class 100 clean room with spin coating facilities, an incubator and microscope with digital camera and monitor
- Apparatus for Photostability Measurements, including under inert atmospheres
- Teng Man apparatus for the evaluation of electro-optic coefficients
- Solid state lasers (CW and pulsed), gas lasers and laser diodes
- A Perkin Elmer Lambda 1050 r brand Uv-vis-Near IR Spectrophotometer
- A Metricon apparatus for rapid evaluation of thin film thicknesses and thin refractive indices at 633, 1330 and 1550nm
- Glove box, high temperature oven and furnace
