Hydrogen technologies
IRL is the leading hydrogen energy research organisation in New Zealand and acts as a New Zealand technical expert for the International Partnership for Hydrogen Economy.
Hydrogen fuel cell
We aim to develop new materials technologies to enable niche New Zealand industries in sustainable hydrogen energy technologies. This research will support the development of a future hydrogen infrastructure to promote both stationary and transport energy solutions for New Zealand.
Our key research interests are:
Hydrogen storage materials
Our aim is to develop materials with a high capacity to store hydrogen, based on ammonia borane or its derivatives, which can store and release hydrogen in a controlled manner on activation. Read more >>
Hydrogen separation and purification membranes
Developing new, nanostructured ceramic membranes to separate and purify high-value gases, such as hydrogen. Read more >>
Electrolyser development
Designing a reliable low-cost alkaline electrolyser that produces pure hydrogen at 1-5 kW levels from renewable electricity for use in fuel cells and other applications. Read more >>
