Carbohydrate nanotechnology
This FRST[?]-funded programme involves the isolation, synthesis, formulation and testing of new carbohydrate-containing chemical entities to identify potential adjuvant candidates for the development of novel, more effective, cell-mediated vaccines.
Adjuvants mean less of a vaccine's expensive active ingredient is needed to provoke an immune response.
Products made may also stimulate regulatory mechanisms to suppress inappropriate inflammatory responses, such as those seen in asthma or autoimmunity.
Successful products discovered in this programme will be developed as drug candidates, benefiting New Zealand’s drug development industry.
The programme is a collaboration with the University of Otago, Malaghan Institute for Medicinal Research and AgResearch.
