High-performance ceramics

High-performance ceramics display unique combinations of properties such as extreme hardness and strength, as well as thermal and physical shock resistance.  Our current research targets the manufacture in New Zealand of new 'sialon[?]' (Si-Al-O-N) ceramics with enhanced thermal and physical properties.

High-performance ceramicsHigh-performance ceramics.

We have extensive expertise and know-how in ceramic powder processing, green (unfired) body fabrication, thermal processing, sintering, microstructure assessment and physical property measurement in ceramic systems.

We have considerable knowledge and IP in the fabrication of high-performance sialon[?] ceramics from low-cost raw materials.  These ‘non-oxide’ ceramics are processed and fired under a protective nitrogen atmosphere, with nitrogen incorporated into the ceramic structure during the reaction and firing process.

The outcome is ceramic materials with great strength and high resistance to molten metal attack at 800°C.  We have particular expertise and patented technology in the fabrication of ‘O-sialon’ ceramics and ceramic composites with silicon carbide (SiC).

In partnership with NZ manufacturer Pyrotek, this research will enable economic production pathways to supply new products with improved thermal performance and durability to meet export markets in the molten metals sector, especially the aluminium industry.
