Distributed and Hydrogen Energy team
This small, multi-disciplinary team is focused on technology innovation and application to address key issues associated with the transformation required in the way we obtain and utilise energy.
Our interest is in the modernisation and inevitable growth of electricity infrastructure and how it is integrated with emerging distributed generation technologies and alternative transport fuels. We believe that the need to reduce the global carbon footprint and the approach of peak-oil offer New Zealand an unprecedented window of opportunity to create a clean, indigenously sourced energy system, and improve the nation’s wellbeing through innovation in energy technology. We have well-equipped laboratory facilities based in Christchurch, and work closely with IRL materials scientists and engineers in the other centres.
Our current research activities include:
- Distributed electricity generation, microgrids, alternative community power supply and energy storage
- Third-generation wave energy conversion technology
- Fuel cells, electrolysis and advanced hydrogen conversion technologies
- Integration of hydrogen as a storable, renewable energy carrier
