Herbert Wong
Dr Herbert Wong, a Principal Scientist with the Carbohydrate Chemistry group, is a leading scientist in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

Herbert Wong
He has spent over 33 years working in NMR[?] with a particular focus on providing other researchers with the latest NMR technology and the know-how and interpretative skills to use it.
Dr Wong completed his tertiary study at Victoria University of Wellington and was awarded a PhD in 1973. His research topic was theoretical crystal field calculations of the magnetic properties of transition metal complexes.
He spent two-and-a-half years as a post-doctoral research associate at Northeastern University in Boston before returning to New Zealand and joining the Chemistry Division of the DSIR, the forerunner of Industrial Research Limited (IRL). He took charge of NMR Spectroscopy and later became Team Manager for NMR Spectroscopy for the Natural Products Processing group within IRL. He spent four years as a Senior Research Scientist, Bioprocessing, with IRL’s Research and Development team before joining the Carbohydrate Chemistry group in 2006.
Dr Wong has used his extensive knowledge and expertise in NMR to upskill and mentor other staff in the use of NMR technologies and techniques and, as a result, to grow IRL’s overall capability in this area. IRL’s solids NMR capability, which currently supports geopolymers, ceramics and hydrogen-energy projects, relies heavily on Dr Wong’s skills. He has also been in charge of IRL’s liquids NMR service for more than three decades.
Awards received by Dr Wong include a University Senior Scholarship in 1969 and a University Postgraduate Scholarship in 1970.
