Dr Douglas Crump began his science career at IRL’s forerunner, the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (the DSIR), joining the Chemistry division in 1975 after gaining a PhD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Auckland in 1970.

For a decade, Dr Crump studied mammalian and insect pest pheromones, contributing to new pest control techniques for New Zealand’s primary industries.

He then spent more than 15 years in management roles both at the DSIR and IRL. A return to laboratory work followed.

Dr Crump isolated agrochemicals for BioDiscovery New Zealand, a company that identifies natural products from New Zealand’s land and marine organisms for use in agriculture and human health.

In 2009 he became part of IRL’s Carbohydrate Chemistry group, where, as a Senior Research Scientist, he studies enzyme inhibitors. Other research interests have been organic synthesis and natural product structure elucidation.

Dr Crump has a keen interest in listening to classical music.
