Dr Bradley Williams gained most of his qualifications in South Africa but decided to settle in New Zealand after several enjoyable visits to the country. He is a Senior Scientist in the Carbohydrate Chemistry group with research interests that cover many areas of organic synthesis. Dr Williams’ particular strengths are in homogeneous catalysis including Lewis acid-mediated chemistry as well as transition metal-catalysed reactions. More recently, he has started working on the use of high renewable content polymers with film-forming characteristics.

Dr Williams was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. He has a BSc Hons cum laude and an MSc cum laude in chemistry from the University of Johannesburg. In 1995, he was awarded a PhD in chemistry from the same university and went on to postdoctoral study at Imperial College in London.

Dr Williams worked in South Africa as Principal Investigator on various projects involving medicinal and industrial chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. He has also been a consultant and expert witness in petrochemical downstreaming, pharmaceutical products, industrial adhesives and in customs tariff classification areas.

Dr Williams has published over 55 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, is co-inventor on two patents and has presented at many international conferences. He has also supervised over 40 MSc and PhD theses.

He is a keen outdoorsman, enjoying road and mountain biking, rock climbing and fly fishing.
