Tips for applying

Below you will find a list of tips to help you with your application.

What do I need to know before I apply for a job at IRL?

IRL expects as a minimum the following documentation:

  • a completed IRL application form; and
  • a covering letter; and
  • a current and relevant CV.

Application form

The application form has been designed to provide us with relevant information about you. Remember we use this form as part of the selection process and a poorly completed form may be the difference as to whether you are shortlisted.

Covering letter

A covering letter should contain information that persuades us to progress your application to the next stage. We want to know what experience, knowledge and attributes you will bring to IRL. Generally, this information should add to what you have provided in your CV.

CV/Resume

The content of your CV should be clear, concise and relevant to IRL’s advertised vacancy. When stating your duties and responsibilities be sure to match these to IRL’s job description. A well prepared CV will give us the information we need to make decisions during shortlisting. A poorly prepared CV will almost inevitably be rejected. Your CV should be treated as a live document requiring constant updating.

Acknowledging receipt of your application

IRL will acknowledge receipt of your application on receipt.

Making the shortlist for interview

After the closing date for a vacancy all applications will be reviewed and a shortlist for interview will be agreed by IRL’s interview panel. If you are not shortlisted you will be notified by email within 10 working days of the vacancy closing. If shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an interview. We aim to notify you of the details for interview no later than 10 working days after the vacancy has closed.

Interviewing

All IRL interviews are behavioural based. This means that you will be asked questions that require you to provide examples of where and when you displayed an identified behaviour. You will know which behaviours are relevant to the vacancy by referring to the job description under the competencies heading. Being prepared is essential and we expect you to have thought about examples where you have displayed the behaviours in the job description before coming to the interview. IRL interviews are viewed as an opportunity for you to find out more about us. We are happy to answer any questions about IRL’s organisation and the role.

Referee checks

At the interview stage we will obtain your permission to contact your referees and confirm your referees’ contact details.

IRL’s decision

We aim to make a decision within five working days after we have conducted the last interview. We will advise unsuccessful and successful candidates within this timeframe.
